The SIUE Chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) Honor Society is partnering with Dr. Stephen Hupp of Psychology, who for several years has hosted book drives for the East St. Louis Head Start program where he serves as the Behavioral Health Consultant. They’re participating as part of a national PKP book drive contest where the top schools will each receive a “little free library” to be placed at their locations of choice (in their case, the East St. Louis Center).
They are collecting new and gently-used books for children who are between 6 months and 6 years old.
To donate: a) send books via campus mail to Steve Hupp, Box 1121, b) drop them off in the red tub across from the Psychology Department in the basement of Alumni Hall or at the University Bookstore in the MUC, or c) email Laura to come pick them up (lpawlow@siue.edu).
The contest goes through Thursday, 4/30/15. Also, the SIUE Bookstore has generously offered a 20% discount on all children’s books purchased to be donated!
The books will be sent home with children attending the SIUE/ESL Head Start program. These kids LOVE books, and these books come with a letter to parents that emphasizes: a) that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends daily reading with children starting at 6 months old, b) the value of incorporating reading into the bedtime routine, and c) tips for making daily reading more meaningful and effective. There are about 1500 children enrolled in their Head Start program each year, so the need is great! So, as you start your spring cleaning, please remember to clean out those bookshelves and/or pick up a book or two for a deserving little one the next time you’re out running errands! We’d also appreciate your help in spreading the word! Please, don’t hesitate to contact Laura with any questions. Laura Pawlow, SIUE Chapter 203 PKP President, lpawlow@siue.edu |
